Re: [OMC-Boats] The Submarine Effect

Basically the "Submarine Effect" is most pronounced on the open bow models, and in particular the 64 to 68 16-ft models. It's one reason OMC engineers designed in 4-inches of additional keel depth in the 69-70 16-ft hulls. To me this makes those boats look like sawed off 19-fter out of water, but the handle better and a 2-mph faster in the water with the benefit of a slightly softer ride owing to greater vee effect at the stern.

You don't even need 6-ft seas. All you need is 4 to 6 passengers in the boat and wake speeds (before the bow starts to come up) and 1-1/2 ft waves. Anyone sitting in the bow area is in for a good bath. It's something a good skipper gets used to. I actually consider it one of the "fun" features of my boat, not a weakness. Just remember Andy's advice, keep the bow pointed into the waves, so you won't get rolled. I often anticipate this, by bumping the bow with the throttle and then backing off again, but be careful you don't throw an unprepared passenger overboard out the back!

I would highly recommend the installation of a automatic bilge pump float-switch. These require a simple re-wiring and additional fused-protected circuit. Once you've added this switch and circuit properly you won't have to have your kid "lean on the switch." If you leave your boat (wet) docked, it will also pump out water that sloshes in, or keep the boat from sinking in the rubber boot is chewed through by the "mythical beaver." Of course, you do have to keep an eye on battery charge levels but this is something you already so, right?

I’ve only gotten caught out ~3 times over 40 years and I’d say 2 of those were because I stopped to help others who were in trouble.

I had my Nephew hold his hand on the bielge pump switch for a long time while I drove, and keeping the boats bow up, in order to get the water out. After that I went straight home.

I needed standard 12” tires (for my SeaDoo) and the prices ranged from $40 to a whopping $140 for the exact same tire. To my surprise, the best price was at a regular tire store for cars (Belle Tire, a chain in the Midwest)—one I almost didn’t even bother to check. Yes, they had to order them and I had to wait a few days, but the $200 was worth it. (Btw, they were $100 more expensive than Costco for the Michelins I wanted on my car.) An RV/Camper store was the highest with the ATV/SeaDoo dealer not much better. Trailer stores and online were marginally better than Belle.

As long as the sidewall isn’t damaged, nail, screw, and other punctures are very easy 5-minute (literally!) repairs with these kits. Just beware the plug is not as robust as an unaltered tire and if you push it to its load/speed limit it is more likely to fail than an unplugged tire. Under normal use it will easily last the life of the tire.

Pretty reasonable considering all the other parts (oil, seals, etc.) he had to supply. I haven’t had time to do squat all winter so there’s no way I would’ve gotten to it myself and I’m glad its done. Now if this ice jam would just break up I’d be all set!
