Re: [OMC-Boats] 67 Surfer rear tie-downs and links to manuals

LOL, okay, I need to read all my e-mail before responding!  What's really interesting about this manual is it shows transom eyes on the boat, but they're still using the deck cleats.  I seem to recall someone years back saying OMC engineers would use the deck cleats to lift the boat out of the water in a pinch, but I can assure you I've personally seen several c leats ripped from the deck (not OMC boats) simply by being towed in not-so choppy water and I've read dozens of stories in BoatUS's Seaworthy publication about the same -- please treat this as an exception for OMC boats and be very wary with other makes you may encounter.

I'm afraid I'm not a good candidate to comment on the Johnson trailers as I have a TeeNee the dealer advised over the Johnson when my Dad bought the boat .  That said, I find if I go in too deep, it can be very difficult to line the boat up on the rollers, especially if there is any current.  I "sight gauge" off the trailer fenders to determine when to stop and those last few cranks on the winch can be real doozies if I don't get it right.  On the flip side, I practically have to back the car into the water just to get the runners on my SeaDoo trailer to water level!

Towing with the transom,

Andy

Subject: [OMC-Boats] 67 Surfer rear tie-downs and links to manuals

Hi Justin and Andy,

Yes, the use of the cleats is consistent with the instructions on page 13 of the 1967 Johnson Surfer Owner's manual and page 9 in the Johnson 19 ft. boat trailer 1967 Owner's Manual found at the links below that I am providing on chance you find the overall documentation interesting.  That said, I am certainly open to the possibility that improvements in approach have occurred since 67'.

1967 Surfer Owner's manual:  http://cid-b35b5e0fd3a90c91.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/1967%20Johnson%20Surfer%20Owner%5E4s%20Manual%20orig.pdf

 Johnson 19 ft. boat trailer 1967 Owner's Manual:  http://cid-b35b5e0fd3a90c91.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/Johnson%201967%2019%20ft%20boat%20trailer%20owners%20manual.pdf

I'd be interested in people's thoughts and guidance re: the Launching and Loading instructions in the trailer manual (pages 6 - 9).  It seems like most folks put their trailers in much deeper than suggested in the manual...in lakes around here (AZ) anyway.  Maybe the unique on-trailer jack accounts for the discrepancy?

> The purpose of the rear tie down is two-fold,?keep the boat from bouncing off the trailer and keep it from sliding backwards should the bow line break.? Tying to deck cleats has two problems.? First, deck cleats are generally much weaker than transom or bow mounts.? They are unusually strong on these old OMC's, but typically they are designed for the relatively light duty loads of mooring.? Many deck cleats have been ripped out by unwary sailors who tried to use them to anchor?tow lines, occasionally striking a person on the opposite end of the rope with grave results.? The second reason is positioning.? If you look at John's pictures, you can see the line actually runs forward as it rises.? Should the bow line break, the boat will slide back 1 - 2' before the rear lines tighten?to hold the boat.? Once the boat starts moving,?you're dealing with much higher dynamic loads which increase the chances the line will break.? Its better than nothing, but its far from optimal.

If the link works (may be?members only), here it is:? ? http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/boatus/200911/#/66 .? Lee, related to this topic, I've now talked to two additional triboligists who also agreed that no additive would restore any fuel or lubricant to "factory fresh" condition.? All agreed it does help to refresh the additives so at least we know we're not wasting money.
