Wrong, sorry to correct that mis-statement. That statement refers to the
later Hydro-Electric shift designs used on the later OMC thru-hub exhaust
lower units on both the outboards and later stringers.

You won't EVER see an electric stringer in proper working condition get you
home without applying electric current to the coil to engage either first or
reverse. Definetly defaults to Neutral, which is why you want never want
corroded or intermittent electrical contacts on your shifter circuit,
connectors or switches. Even an brief open circuit will cause an engine
under load to over-rev or re-engagement will cause spring damage to the
lower unit. Not pretty.

While the "when out-of-water leave it in neutral warning" isn't a bad idea,
it's there mainly to prevent you from actually discharging your battery.
There's not enough amperage pull on the electromagentic coil, that I've
observed to get things very warm through all that gearcase metal. You are
more likely to cause your coil and points to overheat when leaving the
ignition switch on.

Troubleshoot by spliting the problem in half. Isolate the two halves (engine
and drive unit) at the ball gears. Tilt the unit up (or remove it). Now
check you engine by turning the crankshaft over at the front belt pulley.
You should see movement at the back on the ball gear. Now do the same on the
prop and observe the ball gear on the drive.
