Re: [OMC-Boats] NEED HELP WITH 1969.

Hi Leo:

My '69 Sportsman did that very thing.  I think the model and year is just a coincidence.  I backed the boat about a half-mile toward home before someone took notice/pity and gave me a tow.  I took a look at the lower gearcase drawing with its (89) parts (no joke) and promptly switched the entire outdrive with the one on my '68 parts boat and it's worked well ever since - except its white instead of blue.  Sorry I can't be of more help.  I could send you the drawing of the (89) parts if you like.

The slight uptilt in reverse is probably normal - just slippage in the tilt clutch or worm gear.  If the worm gear is disengaged or missing, the propeller will pull the entire outdrive way up, leading to a load roar from the exhaust and then a big clunk when you shut it down and the outdrive bangs down into place again.  In any case this phenomenon is not connected with your lack of forward gear.

Good Luck.

-Doug Julien

>Great job!? My own experience is that the bracket holding the worm gear and shaft in is absolutely required.? I have operated three 1968-69 sportsmans and each has required the bracket, whether or not the snap-ring housing is damaged.? There's just too much pressure for the snap ring to hold the worm shaft in.? OMC changed the design for the 400-800 series in 1974, I think, so that three bolts held the thing together instead of a snap ring.? From my own experience, I don't see how anyone can operate without this bracket.? But a quick perusal of photos on Phil's site will show many boats without it.? Maybe I drive too rough.

>Attached is a photo from ebay showing the bracket and instructions.? One thing - I have had good luck mounting the bracket as snug as possible, but then putting a Kennedy half-dollar under the bracket prongs to force a snugger fit against the end of the shaft assembly.? Perfect size and won't corrode.
