All Evinrude, Johnson and OMC boats were originally equipped with the
odd-fire Buick (then Jeep) 225 (3.7 L) V6. Later on OMC began using the 229
(3.8L) Chevy V6 with the redesigned 1978-up 400/800-Series Stringer. These
are easy to identify as the Chevy V6 looks like a sawed-off small-block V8,
with it's rear mounted vertical distributor. (Buick's are always mounted at
the front and at an angle).

This 225 CID 150-155 hp OMC engine was built by GM-Buick from 1964 to 1967,
then sold and built by Kaiser (Jeep) from 1967 to 1972.

When the gas-crisis of the mid seventies hit Buick bought the tooling back
from Jeep (as they had been acquired by American Motors, who was eager to
supply engines).
The early 74-75 231 (3.8L) V6 Buick's are odd-fire, but then Buick changed
the crank (which some claim weaken it in the process) to an even-fire
design, in mid 1977.

IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO DETERMINE THE TYPE/YEAR OF your hand-me-down 231
engine. From an parts interchange standpoint (225 vs 231), the distributors
are different, the intake manifolds are different. I'm fairly certain than
you can move the original OMC (odd-fire) exhaust manifolds over to the 231,
you might need to do some very minor port matching. You can verrify this by
comapring the exhaust manifold gaskets of the 225 vs 231.

You can still get the 225 parts at NAPA, just ask for 65-66 Buick Special V6
or 67-68 Jeep "Dauntless" V6.

You can read more than you'll ever want to know on the Buick engines at:
