I had the same problem with my 1965 Deluxe 155 V6. I thought it was the
coil overheating as well, BUT found out after a few outings that
unfortunately the oil had leaked out of the upper gear case and it was
seizing-up when it got hot. Then after it cooled a little, it would go
again for awhile. I used it a few times like this thinking it was the coil
until it seized solid. That's why it it won't go any faster the more gas
you give it- it's seizing!
Once I changed the upper gear case it ran perfect.
Check the oil level in the upper and lower gear cases.
