[OMC-Boats] Marine tex et al

I've seen and heard of people using JB Weld for same. Whichever "band aid" material you try, clearly Tom's is very good advice re: not getting stranded, and doing it right if the fix is serious.

But OTOH, what's the potential harm of trying a fix and then running it in a tub of water in your driveway for hours, carefully watching the temps w/ gauges, alarms, non-contact IR guns, etc.? I guess the risk is that it would get a lot hotter under load than you can test on land, but that's why I say also run it in gear if you can.

I've found I can't trust hooking up a hose for tests like this because the water pressure "helps" a bad cooling system work. (I failed to diagnose a cracked impeller housing using a hose, thought I was okay, then overheated and had to shut down on the lake.) Now when I test run on dry land, we use a carefully rigged dumpster that we can fill w/ water and run in with wild abandon. I think someone ought to make and sell collapsible poly versions of this tub that are just the right shape to fit around the OD, and have splash shields, a holder for the garden hose that fills it, a big drain fitting to recycle the water to your lawn, etc...

YMMV.

YOU DO NOT WANT ANY WATER REFLUXING INTO THE ENGINE BY WAY OF THE EXHAUST. Sounds like you need to replace the exhaust manifolds. They do rust out with time. They can be descaled occasionally but will eventually need replacement. Replacements are everywhere - but very expensive and heavy and shipping adds to the expense. Not a hard repair. You might check the nipples on the front caps and replace them if corroded. The back elbows might also be toast if all else is shot. Lots of money but good for many more years if you take care of it and are in fresh water. Repairing a quarter inch crack might get you as far as the middle of the lake before all hell breaks loose. That is stretching it in my opinion Tom

I have used Marine Tex for small repairs in other applications and am aware of its good tensile and compression properties and am wondering whether it will stand up in the cooling manifold application. The hole areas might vary from narrow cracks up to one inch long up to voids in the wall 1/4 inch wide up to one inch long. The material could be applied up to about 1/4 inch thick.
