Enjoy the 68 Sportsman! We are in the process of restoring our '68
Sportman, a 1-family owned boat. Back in '68-'69, my husband-to-be
and I water skied behind this boat; this summer we plan to do so
again. About 5 yrs ago we replaced the 4 cylinder engine with a V6;
the outdrive is original. Last summer we replaced the V-6 because
allegedly someone left an oil absorption rag in the pan and it
disintegrated and really fouled things up. Last summer we made sure
that the new rebuilt V-6 was running well, and then committed to the
next phase. Over the winter we took up the floor, removed the
waterlogged floatation and replaced with closed cell foam insulation.
Stringers were mostly in excellent condition. We laid a new marine
plywood floor and epoxy/fiberglass a top layer to seal out the water
(way more difficult than I just made it sound!). Last night we laid
new carpet over the original Ozite (www.miamicorp.com was a good
source) and reinstalled the fiberglass molded bow seat with much
difficulty. Tonight the side compartments and seats get inserted. We
found a good match from a local upholstery mom-and-pop to cover the
front bucket seat bottoms over the original in case someone wants to
do a true restoration some day--backs with the Evinrude emblem are in
okay condition. The bench seat in the stern is almost okay condition,
but original. We didn't do everything exactly right, but we learned
along the way, and today we know more than we did 6 months ago. We're
happy to share details and lessons learned. Have fun and good luck!
