And the down firing exhaust is slightly more efficient, less back-pressure. Very close to matching the later thru-the-prop exhaust of the 400/800 Stringers.

But it's probably not a cost-effective modification, unless you have the required parts sitting around.

One thing I forgot to mention was that after I did the job, I realized that this particular foil would fit much better or at least install easier with the later style OMC down-firing exhaust rudder, found after 1973. It tapers the opposite way our rudders do, do less material would be in the way. Oh well!

Hey guys,

I'm picking up again on an older post about hydrofoils. I just ordered and picked up a white SE300 hydrofoil and am about to install it to resolve the occasional porpoising and such.

Normally this would involve a simple holed drilled in the plate but I the exhaust outlet at the rearmost position overlaps the two rearmost holes. For you guys that installed the SE300, how did you handle that?? Did you loosen the exhaust housing and insert the mouting screws upward from bottom? It looks like it would get messy to drill down from the top, through the exhaust outlet. The slope of the sides get in the way of a clean bolt attachment (if that makes sense).

How did you do it?

I've got a Stingray XP which is their least expensive model. About $60 most places. See: http://www.cabelas.com/p-0017147.shtml

My boat gets used almost exclusively for water-skiing, tubing, wake boarding, etc. In these activities I typically run between 16 to 24 mph.

The positives: Helps reduce bow-rise on hole-shots, totally eliminates prop ventilation over-revving in high-speed, SKIER-DOWN turns, helps reduce porpoising, allows boat to get on plane quicker and maintain lower planning speed by 2 mph.

The negatives: Reduces best top-end speed by about 3 mph, extends overall length of boat by about 2-3 inches in garage.
