[OMC-Boats] Do You Want More Ethanol?

Hey, Folks! While some may debate the need for lead substitute, I think its pretty clear that ethanol is universally bad for our old boats. I've personally experiences a failed fuel pump that resulted in an explosion and near-injury that I blame on ethanol. I've seen the affects on the fuel tank in my neighbors classic car -- corrosive phase separation that destroyed both the tank and the sender. Ethanol is bad stuff and bad policy (personnally I think butanol, a near 1-for-1 gasoline substitute is a much better solution, but I'll spare you that arguement). Few things get me going enough to organize against it, but this is obviously one of them. If it affects my boat, it affects your boat so I hope you'll invest a few moments to tell the EPA "NO to ethanol!" as I did.

      Dear BoatUS Member:

      We need your help!

Strong pro-ethanol advocates are pushing the Obama Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to increase ethanol levels in gasoline to 15% (E15). As you may have read in BoatUS Magazine, ethanol at the currently allowed 10% (E10) level has been shown to cause significant problems for some marine engines and boat fuel systems. To read more click here.

Higher levels of ethanol have not been tested in marine engine systems, and in fact may void marine engine warranties. BoatUS is part of a broad coalition of over 50 consumer, industry, and environmental organizations working to insure that science is part of the federal decision.

Specifically, we are asking that EPA deny the waiver requested by ethanol producers to increase the allowable ethanol level to 15% until unbiased testing demonstrates that higher blends would pose no threats to gasoline engines, public health, the environment, and consumers.

CLICK HERE to send comments (due before May 21) directly to EPA. It doesn't have to take more than one minute. If you have a little more time and can customize your letter, it will make your message even stronger.

Please share this email with your boating family, friends, and groups. We need as many letters as possible.

      Thank you,
