No, No, a cracked head can be replaced - the last one I did took me 1.5
hours and I was Lolly Gagging while doing it.
 
Awesome!! I am meeting up with my mechanic in about 2 hrs and this is
good info to have in case I need it ;)
 
 
If you are mechanical it's no big deal - these engines are easy to work
on.
 
Nice…I am mechanical when I know if I screw something up, it’s okay if I
can’t use my boat for awhile because it’s raining constantly outside
 
 If you hire it done it will cost, but the biggest problem you may have
is finding a used head - very few old Buick or Jeep V6's around any more
- and not all those engines have the exact same head - you need to go by
the numbers on the head.
 
I would like to get more familiar with that engine so I don’t have to
rely on a mechanic all the time…I will probably attempt it myself (if I
need it). Already copied those #’s down when I got the boat……

thats why aside from my 6 OMC boats I have three V6 blocks, One complete
V6, two complete 120 hp inline 4 cylinder engines, three extra stern
drives, lots of motormounts and intermediate housings - guy never knows
when he might need something! - but first, check out the compression
when the engine is hot - that may not be a problem - I had a boat once
that I picked up with no power - couldn't even get on plane - found out
it was just the dwell setting on the points - once adjusted and the
timing set, it jumped out of the water - so don't worry about it until
you know - whatever it is, I am sure the group will be able to help!

Yeah, agreed. But this guy seems legit, has a big shop, boats only, OMC
certified, etc.

Second, always feel the exhaust manifolds - if water is circulating they
will be warm, not hot - and you are ok - if hot, you are not ok.
 
That is one I will definitely try…..
 
As to the power loss - the first thing to check is the compression - if
any cylinder is low, say less than 120 psi, you could well have a
cracked head - the most common crack is between the intake and exhaust
valves which are very close together and the crack is usually very thin
and hard to see - usually with this type of crack the engine will run
fine when cold and then lose power as soon as it heats up - so it is
best to check compression when it is hot. Dave
 
And if it’s a cracked head, that spells new engine, right? Not fixable,
right? (gulp).

I have always had outboards, all of which had a nice easy to see tell
tale stream of water shooting out the side when things were working
right. I asked 2 boat mechanics on separate occasions if stern drives
were supposed to have the same thing, both said no – that outboards do,
but i/o’s don’t. But this post says otherwise. So do they or don’t
they? And if not, why not? How are you supposed to tell if water is
circulating properly?

while it is running - on the starboard side of the drive you should see
a steady stream of water shooting out - if not shut her down - that
would mean the impeller is not pumping at all. Next, if water is coming
out open the engine cover and feel the exhaust manifolds - they should
be cool enough to hold your hand on - if not and they feel really hot
when the light is on, then shut her down - it would likely be the engine
water pump, or the thermostat that needs attention. As to wintering,
and I know people will flip at this, but I have seven OMC's and have had
them for years and have always just opened the petcocks on each side of
the block - never bothered taking off the water pump hoses etc. - just
make sure the boat is realatively level and the block will drain down
and you will not have any freezing problems. I keep an OMC V6 Sportsman
on the davits on the back of my houseboat - and I have used it at 10
below zero - when I lift it back out of the water all I do is open those
two petcocks - the only real problem I have is remembering to close them
when I go for a ride - of course eventually warm water will creep up to
my feet - a sure, but gentle reminder! Dave
