Re: [OMC-Boats] slow starting?.. (sv), Vol 70, Issue 1

Originally they had a dual diaphragm fuel pump with a small glass jar coming out the side. If gas ever shows up in the jar it means the diaphragm is leaking and fuel pump needs replaced. Not sure if those old fuel pumps are still available or not but the dual diaphragm was a safety feature required by the USCG to prevent fuel from leaking in the boat which results in a potential fire hazard.

One more thing to check. After the engine has been running for awhile check the voltage going into the distributor. Those old wiring harnesses had a problem with the insulation cracking and coming off. If the wires get wet they have a tendency to build up internal corrosion. This will increase internal resistance resulting in voltage drop to the distributor. If needed run a new wire from ignition switch to distributor power wire. Good luck.

If it starts then quits right away, it's not an ignition problem, it's a fuel problem. You said it would not start back up after sitting for 5 minutes. It sounds like the fuel is draining out of the fuel line and back into the gas tank. Check for a week fuel pump, or damaged check valve (in the pump) that keeps fuel from draiining back to tank. I'm not sure what type fuel pump it uses so that's the most I can tell you.
