Get a Seloc manual for that year stern drive. The tilt motor removal is one
of the gnarliest tasks but you should be able to get it out without pulling
the motor. There usually is plenty of dirt etc. in the bilge. The good thing
is replacement parts are readily available on ebay. Sea Way Marine in
Seattle WA is another good source. You can get them cheap on ebay if you are
patient. Check some easy things first like make sure the tiltmotor is
getting power. You can raise and lower the stern drive by removing the
quadrant gear. Make sure you support the drive when taking the quadrant gear
out as the drive is heavy and will swing down. You can prop it up with a 2x4
but make sure it is secure. If you are not mechanically inclined then sell
the boat unless you have good local service LOL. BOAT = Break Out
Another Thousand ! TK

I have a 1970 Evinrude Explorer with what I think is a tilt motor that needs
service. I tried to remove the tilt motor and the 2 bolts that run through
it, but it can't be removed where it's located due to space restrictions.
Does anybody have any tips? I can't believe I would have to remove the
whole engine and outdrive to get to the tilt motor.
