Yes.  You can't use anything other than a stringer related outdrive.  You can't use a Mercruiser or Volvo outdrive as they mount to the transom rather than the engine.  You'd have to totally build up the transom to make any change work and it's probably not worth the effort.  It does create some limitations!

Ok, that makes perfect sense. Also seems like a good idea. But it must
have some drawbacks given that the idea didn't catch on and I assume
isn't still in use today.
