Re: [OMC-Boats] 68 Sportsman running on 2 cylinders

I'd start by "reading" the spark plugs. I prefer to see if I have spark
by using an inductive timing light. Pulling off the high-tension wires
is a good way to insure they won't work, by creating "open" circuits.

You don't say, but if it were mine I'd hook up an o'scope and read both
the high tension and low-voltage (points/condensor) side of the
ignition.

How old are you spark plug wires?

Be sure and review this info with your mechanic:

Subject: [OMC-Boats] 68 Sportsman running on 2 cylinders

Hi, all --
So over the weekend, I got my '68 back in the water w/ repaired stern
drive. Turned out the fwd/reverse wires had melted together in the lower
unit. This caused the spring magnets to both engage and fight each
other. Reverse won, and broke the fwd spring. So no fwd.

Anyway, that solved, I ran into another issue. At the lake, it started
hard, but idled nice, and reved up in idle like normal. But no power
past low throttle out on the water. So we started pulling wires off w/
engine running to test for firing, and found that only the (I think)
#1 and #3 cylinders are firing. Other than the obvious (loose plugs,
fouled plugs, bad wires, bad cap), any hints? Could the points be bad,
or if 2 cylinders are firing, are they prob okay?

I plan to drop off at a car mechanic (w/ a hose) to diagnose, but
thought I'd look for ideas. Thanks, as always, in advance.

-Micah
