E/J/O introduced the alternator setup on the 1961 models some models of the
1961 75 HP. Evinrude call it "Uni-Charger". Then the electric-shift 1962
models onward featured alternators. There was also a DC generator but it
was only rated at 15 amps rather than the alternator's 20-amps.

You could probably lift a generator "kit" off of an older V-4 but that seems
like two steps back. Can you figure out what might be causing the diodes to
fail? Perhaps bad stator?

I'm not familar enough with what changes were made in alternator regulators
bewteen 1961-62 and 1966, but I do know the generator models had the
external junction boxes.
