I ditto Glen's thoughts. It is getting a little harder to find auto
mechanics that haven't cut their teeth on TBI, EFI and ECM's (electronic
replacements for carbs and coils & points). But other than hooking up water
and knowing not to rev her much past 2500 RPM on the hose, you sure don't
need old-school OMC Stringer-specific training/experience to work on good
old American GM (Chevy) 4's, Buick 6's and Buick/Chevy V8's. All the basic
tune-up stuff is available straight from NAPA or your corner Chevy garage. I
agree it's rather dumb to pay a extra premium price to a marine shop
mechanic for the routine stuff.
