[omc-boats] RE: omc-boats-digest V1 #176

I checked on the wiring, which appeared to be fine. I'm not entirely
confident in my electrical diagnosis skills, though. I pulled the fuel
sender. I asked my dad if he had ever replaced it. He had not. That was
certainly confirmed when I removed it. I think if I would have breathed on
it too hard, it would have turned to rust dust and blown away in the wind.
35 years old. It's hard to believe it lasted that long. Thanks to Lee
Shuster for the website. I ordered a new sender and expect to have it
installed this weekend. Common sense tells me that was the problem. Even
if it isn't, it's not like it's a bad idea to replace it. I'll let you know
how it turns out.

Recently, I located a new Stewart-Warner fuel sender for $22.00, (with
adjustable arm to compensate for tank depth) at one of the local semi truck
parts distributors that was listed on the S-W website. The original was was
rusted out and no longer changing resistance. The five-bolt pattern for
mounting the sender is pretty common. Had the tank out anyways for a
cleaning and coating.

PS -- The original pre-67 guages are in unique (square) housings. Maybe
Aqua-Meter, Airguide or S-W supplied them to OMC, but they were unique to
OMC. Presently, my Sportsman tach on my V6 Buick is currently reading
exactly double what it should, which would be the same pulse count as a
2-stroke (12-pole) alternator output. This winter I'll tear it down and see
what's behind the meter faceplate.
